Under the terms of the deal, Prysmian will supply TIM Celular Brasil with more than 1,200 km of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) telecom cables. The cables will be installed on the Tucurui-Macapa-Manaus transmission line as part of the LT Amazonas infrastructure modernisation project. The Tucurui-Macapa-Manaus line, dubbed The Big Line and located on the left bank of the Amazon River, is over 1,800 km long. It aims to enhance the electricity system in the north of the country by connecting the capital cities of the Amazon and Amapa regions to bBrazil/bs second largest hydroelectric plant, located in Tucurui. The connection will consist of seven transmission lines and eight substations involving an overall investment of more than EUR 1.2 billion./p

pThe Brazilian government will submit to Congress within the next 15 days an interim measure providing a tax exemption for the telecommunications industry. Communications Minister Paolo Bernardo said that the sector will see a reduction in a range of taxes, including the IPI (Excise Tax), PIS and COFINS. The goal is to stimulate investments in the sector. Bernardo added that the tax breaks will last until 2016, and the cut could reach 25 percent for some production, including radios, modems, construction of towers, ducts, fibre optics and others. The IPI exemption would apply to the construction of networks, stations and substations. Currently, companies invest nearly BRL 17 billion, and the goal is to reach BRL 25 billion in investments per year./p/font/font

pOnline music service Rdio, which offers millions of songs from various record labels on monthly payment plans, will be released in bBrazil/b on 1 November. There will be two plans. The cheapest, only to listen to music on personal computers, will cost BRL 8.99 per month. The other plan, costing BRL 14.90, is intended for those who also want to listen on mobile devices. Rdio will come to bBrazil/b in partnership with Oi and will be called Oi Rdio. The Brazilian version will initially have 12 million songs. The collection will have a Brazilian local flavor, but most of the collection will be from the US, bringing music from labels such as Warner, a class=companylink title=Sony onclick=DisplayMenu(this,snyco, C, Inline);return false; href=javascript:void(0);Sony/a and Universal. pBrazilian entrepreneur Eike Batista, owner of the EBX group, announced he is in advanced negotiations with the Taiwanese tablet manufacturer Foxconn to become a partner in groups planned operations in bBrazil/b. Batista officially announced his plans at a 21 October meeting with Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff. In April, Foxconn announced it would invest BRL 12 billion in bBrazil/b with the opening of a factory for the production of tablets in the country. Last week, bBrazil/bs Minister of Science and Technology Aloizio Mercadante announced that the multinational would install two factories for touchscreen devices in the country. Batista did not mention any percentages of participation, adding that the financial construction is still under study./p

Oviedo, 18 oct (EFECOM).- El fondo de capital-riesgo estadounidense Carlyle Group ha alcanzado un acuerdo con Liberbank, la entidad financiera creada tras la fusión de Cajastur con Caja Cantabria y Caja Extremadura, y Editorial Prensa Ibérica para la adquisición de un 85 por ciento de la operadora de telecomunicaciones Telecable.

Según ha informado la compañía norteamericana, el acuerdo valora en 400 millones de euros a Telecable, en la que Cajastur mantendrá una participación accionarial del 15 por ciento.

Con la venta del 77 por ciento de su participación en la empresa de telecomunicaciones, Liberbank ha ultimado además la recapitalización de 325 millones de euros exigida por el Banco de España, han explicado a Efe fuentes financieras.

Liberbank, que dispone de una prórroga del Banco de España que acaba el próximo martes 25 para reforzar su capital, tal y como estaba previsto, no precisará inyección de dinero público a través del Fondo de Reestructuración Ordenada Bancaria (FROB).

La nueva entidad ha optado por cubrir principalmente su déficit de capital de 325 millones con la venta de participadas, por lo que no tendrá que colocar una parte significativa del banco entre inversores privados.

Telecable, la compañía de telecomunicaciones líder en Asturias, se fundó en 1995 y cuenta con una cartera de más de 156.000 clientes, genera un volumen de empleo de más de 800 personas -de ellas más de 150 de empleo directo-, y facturó el pasado año 121 millones de euros, un 14 por ciento más que en 2009.

En un comunicado, Carlyle Group considera que la compra de Telecable, una de las empresas pioneras en el uso de fibra óptica en España, representa “una gran operación” dado que se ha comportado de manera “excepcional” en los últimos años y tiene un gran potencial de futuro.

Para Telecable, su venta a la compañía estadounidense supone disponer de un socio “de solidez contrastada” que aportará su red de contactos y su extensa experiencia en el sector “a escala global”.

Un portavoz de Liberbank asegura que este acuerdo permite incorporar al proyecto de la compañía asturiana “a un socio de referencia internacional que le permita cumplir su gran potencial de desarrollo”.

In the year to August, Brazil‘s National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) received 1,877,048 complaints from users of mobile and fixed telephony, internet and cable TV services. Of the 48,438 complaints about fixed telephony in August this year, 11,088 related to line repairs. The others concerned charging, line installation, services, change of address, cancellation, blocking, access codes, service plans and additional services. There were 81,497 complaints from mobile customers this August, with billing being the most common problem, accounting for 34,013 complaints. Billing was also the most frequent problem for pay-TV subscribers, who made 7,753 complaints in August 2011. In terms of internet services, repairs not properly carried out topped the list of complaints sent to Anatel in August, with 9,270 recorded.

Mobile phones with more than one Sim card accounted for 17.5 percent of sales in Brazil in August and 12.2 percent in the period January to August, according to research conducted by GfK. In comparison, multi-Sim devices accounted for only 2.3 percent of sales in the same period last year. In August, Samsung accounted for 28.3 percent of sales in this segment in Brazil, followed by LG (18.1%), Motorola (16.5%), ZTE (13.5%) and Nokia (8%). GfK estimates a total 35.1 million mobile phones were sold in Brazil in the first eight months of 2011, an increase of almost 13 percent over the same period last year.

Telefonica has selected TEL-NT, a subsidiary of Telmar Network Technology, to provide multi-vendor repair services and management of its spare parts program for its optical, data and wireline networks in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. TEL-NT will provide network-wide repair at a Latin American independent laboratory located in Valinhos, Brazil. In addition to repair services, TEL-NT has expanded its storage capacity by opening nine spare depots in Sao Paulo state, to manage access to and deployment of 130,000 spare parts to Telefonica’s networks across the state. TEL-NT’s spare depots will be located in Aracatuba, Bauru, Presidente Prudente, Ribeirao Preto, Santos, Sao Jose dos Campos, Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Sao Paulo and Sorocaba.
